Langkawi May 2018

First time seeing Changi Airport T4. Everything is automatic, so it takes a bit of getting used to. But I believe after a few times, it should be convenient and fast. In Singapore, I usually prefer automatic than being serve by people since I don’t find the service standard something I look forward to.
Good that we are early, we get to go to the food court without the usually peak hour crowd. Dim sum was pretty good. There is a nice view of the planes. And also a seating area with low chairs for young children. Nice.
For travelers without young children, you are expected to use the automatic system to get thru the immigration. Otherwise you have to go thru the immigration via the officer, which we did.
The departure hall is huge. Much more selection of retail and food option as compare to the public area. We didn’t have enough time to explore the whole area as much as we want. The heritage area is also located in the departure hall, to my surprise.

The boarding gate areas is huge with high ceiling and full glass for plane lovers to enjoy great view of the planes. Also very spacious so you wouldn’t feel like cattles lining up to board plane. But the queue is again separate into those who using the automatic gate or manual method thru immigration officers.
After boarding, Yui fell asleep, much to our relief. She only woke up when we arrive at Langkawi. The rest of the flight are uneventful
We arrive at Langkawi feeling abit hungry since we have an early lunch. So we check out the Starbucks which I hardly patronize in Singapore. But since SGD is so strong against MYR, it’s really affordable. Other than Starbucks, there is Marry Brown. Jason pick up the car first and then join us for tea break. He thinks he need a full meal and bought MB Nasi lemak. But later on at dinner, he was still able to eat a full meal.

Labu Labi Beach Chalet

As the name implies, it’s a chalet. Meaning everything is no frill service and quality. The best thing about this place is the really close proximity to the beach (20-50mts) and the beautiful sunset. We enjoy playing in the water and strolling by the beach. Fish and chip outlet is few meters away which makes staying here convenient.

Beware of mosquitoes. I couldn’t sleep the first night because of the itch and irritating buzzing sound from the mosquito. Luckily, Yui has a baby cot with mosquito net, so she is spared from the bite. We sprayed insect repellant on 2nd night and it was ok.
Tanjong Rhu beach is quiet and undeveloped unlike Cenang beach. There are other chalet along the beach. I believe there are sea sports activity too but we did not explore.

Night Market

In Langkawi, there is a daily night market. Depending on the day, the night market is held at a different location. We went to 2 night market – one near Kuah and one near Cenang Beach.
There are plenty of food and drink option – Burger, Minjiang Kway, Satay, fried chicken, Nasi Lemak, Fried Noodle, lamb chop, snacks and more. I tried fish satay for the first time. You can also find fruits, fresh meat and seafood on sale. Typically, night market are crowded and hot. Perhaps a short walk thru to grab the food and drink is good enough.

Hiking

We wanted to hike up to the Top Station of the cable car via the Sky Trail. But there were no info about the trail start on the internet except those who took up a package. We arrive at the Sky Cab area and ask around. We were directed to a counter which was not our intention. We ask a guy how to get to the trail start and was shown a general direction. We tried and for 30mins, we were hiking in circles near the cable car structures. Then somehow we manage to find a trail. After a while, we have to cross a bridge and emerge on the main road leading to the seven wells. Well looks like we can try to climb Gunung Matcincang since we are here. We know we started late, so it’s quite unlikely to complete the trek in 2 hours. We plan to turnaround based on a fixed time. It wasn’t an easy climb. Some section are quite steep. We didn’t see anyone until 1 hour into the trek. We were told that the summit should be near. Nevertheless, we turnaround after 20-30mins. Descending wasn’t faster though. Due to the steep section, it took us effort to negotiate the gradient. We trek back to the Skycab area to look for our wife and child.

Leech

Jason found leech on his feet. I was then reminded that leech encounter are common in Malaysia mountain, although not all mountain. So after the first sighting. I pay attention to any itch or bite on me. Found 1-2 leech who made its way to my leg. I don’t find them scary but just dislike them for sucking my blood and leaving the area itchy.
On the descend, I found an itch in my crotch area. I assume it must be abrasion since I am wearing a pair of underwear to trek for the first time. I found the itch earlier on the ascend but dismissed it. Then it dawn on me it could be a leech. I reach out my hand into the crotch area and found it. Well, it must have been feasting for at least an hour. Yucks. Now it looks fat and full. I should have check earlier when I first felt the itch/bite.
When we got back to Skycab, one of the thing on our mind is to find a toilet so that we can thoroughly check our body for leech. I did not find any but Jason found one. I heard him shouted and wonder what happened. We both came out of the cubicle and he told me a leech has drop into the toilet bowl and it’s nowhere to be seen. I check and found it after a few second. I catch it using my fingers then we use soap and wash it down the basin. Immediately, a man walk into the toilet and use the cubicle that we just remove leech from. I can’t imagine if we just left the leech there… We better go soon before we hear someone screaming.

Ranis Lodge

Jason family went to take the Cable cars. It was a crowded day and they took time to come and fetch us.
Ranis Lodge is really remote, deep in a kampong area. Everything about this place is perfect except for the mosquito.
The swimming pool was wonderful, especially so on a hot day like today. We had fun dipping in the water. So nice to see the girls interacting and enjoying each other company.
However, the next morning we had to bid goodbye to the Ongs. The girls enjoy each others’ company, we wish we had more time together

Yuan’s Spa

We look up Tripadvisor for cheap eats and found one in Tengah Beach. By the time we arrive at Boat Restaurant, Yui is already asleep. She continued to sleep even after we finished the food and drink.
We decided to let her sleep in the pram while we stroll around the area. Just a few meters away. We saw a feet massage center. Since it was such a hot day, we decide to check it out. Foot massage for RM78/hr. We highly recommend this Spa. They have other service which include body massage and more. The rooms are private, quiet, well decorated, dimly lit, nice soft music. All condition for having a relaxing time. It’s not the Chinese tradition massage but more of a relax massage.

Cable Car

This is the 2nd time we came here during this trip. Langkawi is hot. Even without exerting energy, we were sweating while seated. We are glad to come on a weekday. There is hardly any crowd. We walk straight to the board the cable car without having to wait. The cable car interior is warm. I am not sure if we could open the windows on the side. I didn’t notice the windows on the ride up but on the ride down, the cable car’s window is open and so much cooler. We got off the mid station and realize is quite a small look out platform with already quite a lot of people. So we walk back to the cable car queue and ride up to the top station, this time just the 3 of us in the cable.
The top station has been upgraded. The look out platform is much bigger and has plenty of space. The view of the forest, mountain and sea is quite spectacular.

The skybridge is now open. Do note it’s quite a walk from the top station. There is an additional charge of RM5. If you don’t wanna walk. There is an option to take a ‘tram’. We opt to walk and was not aware of the charges. The Skybridge is also not suitable for those with fear of high. I don’t think the view from the skybridge is vastly different from the top station platform. Since the bridge is narrower, there is a feeling of “dropping from height”.

Underwater World Langkawi
Located right in Cenang. We are not the most keen visitor. But to keep Yui in the resort with no program was our main reason for filling up the morning with some activities, in the hope to keep Yui occupied.
We arrive at the time of opening. I believe we are the first to arrive. Honestly, this place is quite forgettable. I do remember the Penguin enclosure and Penguin feeding. There is a Typhoon and Earthquake experience which we couldn’t go as Yui was too young. Also there was a place there you can colour your own sea creatures and release them into the ocean created by the projector. It was quite fun.

Wildlife Park

This park is quite different from the zoo in Singapore. My idea of zoo is watching animals from afar in their enclosure and from animal shows. In the Wildlife Park, you can buy food to feed the animals. Not all animals but most. There are ample signs put up to tell you what to feed. I am not a fan of touching animals especially their mouth and saliva. But still it was interesting to be able to interact with animal in such close proximity. There are also official feeding time and most of them are narrated by the staff. I enjoyed watching the White Belly Eagle and Otters feeding up close. The deer feeding was ok as the deer are quite aggressive.
Also, we came at a time where there is hardly any visitors. Not quite used to it as Singapore is perpetually crowded but definitely nice to be alone.
We also confirm that Yui is afraid of touching animals, even the harmless one like rabbits. She’s ok to see them in the enclosure and from afar.

Gunung Raya

We have a couple of hours to spare so we decided to drive up to the peak. During our honeymoon almost 3 years ago, I have great memories of us enjoying the ride up to the summit. We spot the native monkeys which we are so excited about. Also on the descend, we pull over at the side and doze off on a lazy after. Today is very different because we have a toddler with us.
On the drive up, I kept a look out for the monkeys but they were nowhere to be found. When we got to the peak, we took a short walk around the area to enjoy the view. The hotel/resort is now closed. Haha. I really wonder who would want to stay up here.

To Coney Island by Kayak

Singapore is Wild. Even in a built up city, we can still see wild life on a regular basis. This year alone, just within Punggol, I saw otters, monitor lizards and eagles.

On mon, I decided to take my kayak out to the sea. My buddy and I took a bus from my house to the Punggol Beach (Punggol Settlement). We set up the inflatable kayak and in 20 mins we were paddling towards Coney Island. It was a cloudy day so we couldn't see the sunrise. It was a very quiet morning with a handful of people fishing at the Punggol Jetty.

I saw 2 eagles soaring above. I have seen this sight before in Langkawi and at Sungei Buloh. Not long after, I saw the eagle (I think it's a White-Bellied Fish Eagle) diving into the sea and I think it caught a fish. Wow, this is like National Geography except that this is live! We continue to paddle along the coast.

By the time we got near to Beach C, 45 mins has passed since we started. I suggest to turn back. Further more, my shoulders are getting tired from paddling due to lack of usage of muscle group. Further more, my paddles are heavy. This makes me want to buy lighter paddles.

Between Beach C and B, I saw the eagles flying and resting on a branch. Upon further observation, I heard chicks making sound where the eagle landed, I think it's a nest. So amazing to see such wild life in Singapore.

As we paddle back to the jetty, fatigue sets it. One particular section was choppy with fairly strong wind, making paddling a chore. By the time we got back to the starting point. I was glad to set my foot on land. I think I am getting sea sick from the choppy water. We rinse of the sea water, deflate the kayak, pack them into the bags and headed home by bus again.

Marriage

And so the journal begin.

On 08 Nov 2014, after dating the love of my life for more than 2 years. We got married at one of my favorite place in Singapore- MacRitchie Reservior. We are so grateful for that God has brought us together.

It was a whole day of activity starting as early as 6am for my wife. In the morning, the activities were held at Orchid Country Club. First we have the Solenmisation, follow by tradtional Chinese Tea ceremony, follow by Chinese wedding banquet lunch. When this is done, we travelled down to MacRitchie Reservior for our Holy Matrimony.

As I look back, I wonder how did we pull thru such a day packed with activity. We were pleasantly surprised that we enjoy every moment of our wedding. Sure it was not a perfect wedding, and not everything turn out the way we originally planned.

From the time we engaged till the day we got married, we had slightly less than 6 months to plan for the wedding. We heard there are couples who plan 2 years for their wedding. For me and my wife, the wedding is a big part of our marriage, but it's how we live as married couple for the rest of our life that we are looking for and focusing on. Perhaps some couple equate wedding to marriage but they are really 2 different matters. Anyway, I just couldn't wait to marry my wife, even in the earlier stage when we were dating, I kept asking and getting hints from her close friends if she is ready. BUT it is really worth the wait.

1 aspect of wedding planning that really surprise me is choosing my Bestman and Groomsmen. Haha, it:s not the wedding theme or venue (erm, venue is quite a big consideration). I really wanted to ask the right person to by my side on my big day. Perhaps in male friendship, that is the highest honour you can tell a buddy that they are very important to you. Since my list is longer than the number of Bestman/Groomsman that my wife and I decide on, I really have to crack my head to pick the right person. There are few men that I didn't ask to be my Groomsman, but that doesn't mean they are not important to me. I thought hard and long about this and decide to organise a day trek, inviting all my buddies, just like how other guys have bachalor night, I have my bachelor day trek. I work out well, in the end 7 of us travel up to Melaka to trek up Gunung Datuk. It was a great day of male bonding time.

A special mention to the following person who help us so much, I just couldn't thank them enough, in no order of importance and significance.
My parents who are so supportive of this marriage. I think I made them wait long enough
My sister Sharon, who plan the seating arrangement at the banquet lunch and for taking care of the guest when they arrived.
My sister Jocelyn for allowing her son Liam to be my pageboy
My sister Charmaine for doing make up for my wife and many others (my mom). Also for allowing her daughter Lavelle to be one for the flowergirl
My sister Jasmine for allowing her daughter Celyn to be one of the flowergirl
The brothers and sisters from church who help us thruout the years from courtship to dating to engage to marriage - Richard and Serina, Anthony and Phyllis, Aik Kee (he gave me specific instruction on how to woo my wife!!) and Justina, Teck and Patrice, Taka and Shinobu, Darrell and Seiko, Nori and Fiona, and many more.
My Bestman Raymond for being my buddy all these years. Someone closer to me than a brother
My Groomsmen Jason, Bernard and Roger. All the men who are very important to me, inspired me to be a better man and being a great buddy.
Sherlee who created the wedding invitation and poster and gave a theme to the wedding. In my heart, these are the most beautiful wedding invitation and poster I can ever have for my wedding.

My wedding coordinator Leon and Dee. So wonderful to re-connect with you guys and created even stronger friendship.
Sheena from OCC, She made planning for banquet such a breeze.
Karen Chen from Vava Bistro. She was amazing person to work with. Detailed and sensitive to our needs and request.
Decor Team Jessica, Karen, Ching Eu and Shawn. You have amazing talent. So touched by your love for me and Nami and all the sacrifices you made. You transfer our wedding venue in our dream wedding.
So many other people I want to thank but it's impossible to name everyone.
Frank Foo my photographer. Thank you for capturing all the wonderful memories on still.

Brothers Bonding Trek - Gunung Datuk Oct 2014

What should we call this trip? Jerry's last trek? Or maybe Brothers bonding trek? We settle for the latter.

I always hear bad stories about how men were shamed or tortured prior their wedding day in a so called Bachelor's night. What is the purpose of it. No one knows. We just follow what we heard others have done before. I like to challenge the norm.

According to Jerry, it is ok for the men who are close to the groom to get together prior to the wedding. If the purpose is to create memory, then I say there are thousand other way than to sin (it is not uncommon for this to be a promiscuous affair and it is as far as your imagination can go) or shame (put on Strawberry suit and walk around Orchard Road).

I decide to plan my own gathering with my brothers by organising a trekking trip to Malaysia. The plan is straight forward. We meet before sunrise, get on a MPV and cross the custom. Along the way, we stop for toilet break and meals when necessary. We were at first a little hesitate to fit 7 men into a car, considering that some of us are quite tall and some of us are quite big. Turns out it was reasonable. We was nice to travel in 1 car than several cars. No need to wait for one another or wonder what is the front car's driver intention. Plus, we have so many drivers, the option to change driver is always available.

We manage to fit into Raymond MPV.

By 1030, we know we were 30 mins away from the trail start. So we stop at Ayer Keroh rest stop.

We ready reach Gunung Datuk trail start at 1100am. Took some time to change into our gears, visit the toilet and pay park permit fee of RM5 per person. There is a carpark, campsite with proper toilet and shower facilities. By Malaysia standard, this is consider very well maintained.

So just before we hit the trail, I stopped by a shelter to gather the men. I took the chance to appreciate them for taking time out for this trip. It means a lot for me that I can gather brothers whom I am close to for a trip prior to my wedding. Since I couldn't possibly ask all of them to be my groomsmen, this is my way of telling them that I consider all of them my buddies and that they are important to me. We had a short prayer and I led the way to the trails.

Gunung Datuk is slightly over 800mt. It's a single track trail. Getting lost is quite unheard of unless you stray off the main trails and bash thru the forest. The first half of the trail is quite steep. After that the the trails becomes gentle slope. It's not technical and anyone with reasonable fitness would likely to make it to the summit.

After a few flights of stairs, you will reach the summit.

Reward ourselves with snacks at the Summit
It started raining  when we descend.

At the base/starting point. we get cool water to wash up.

No trek is complete without a good meal. We stopped by one of my fav Zi Char stall in Cheng, Melaka.

Look forward to our next trek together.

Run along Melaka River

http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/508849267

Run long the Melaka River and historical site. Every year I go back to Melaka, there is a new development. Could Melaka be over developed? Only time will tell.

This morning I run by myself and a monitor lizard accompanied me. Further up the river, I found another lizard.

Because of the new development, some section of the trails along the river was closed, I have to use the road to get around it.

Kledang Hill (Ipoh)

Today, I had the privilege to go to Kledang hill with a local.

Kledang hill is in the town of Menglembu. Like many hill in msia, the trail start is near a residential area.

We started at 1130pm. We're attempting to get  to the summit via the RTM route. Supposedly, there are 4trails leading to the summit. The most obvious route is the tarred road.

The first 15-20mins. There is no sight of the signage. Since Jason has been here once, he relied on his experience. 1 junction is really discreet, we have to spot a trail leading us across a small.

I've read a blog about his trek, the RTM trail.was described as ' difficult to get lost". Previously, Jason also attempted RTM trail and took a wrong turn. After backtracking, he 'chance' upon the trial. He told a local about his experience and was told that it is almost impossible to get loss on RTM.

Today after I experience it myself, I wouldn't describe RTM as 'impossible to get lost". There are numerous junction without signage. Some trails in west msia is almost impossible to get lost such as Gunung Panti, Gunung Datuk, Gunung Berlumut. This.trails are almost single track with hardly any junction. Even if there's  a junction, it usually leads to a dead end for water source or camp site.
