Brothers Bonding Trek - Gunung Datuk Oct 2014

What should we call this trip? Jerry's last trek? Or maybe Brothers bonding trek? We settle for the latter.

I always hear bad stories about how men were shamed or tortured prior their wedding day in a so called Bachelor's night. What is the purpose of it. No one knows. We just follow what we heard others have done before. I like to challenge the norm.

According to Jerry, it is ok for the men who are close to the groom to get together prior to the wedding. If the purpose is to create memory, then I say there are thousand other way than to sin (it is not uncommon for this to be a promiscuous affair and it is as far as your imagination can go) or shame (put on Strawberry suit and walk around Orchard Road).

I decide to plan my own gathering with my brothers by organising a trekking trip to Malaysia. The plan is straight forward. We meet before sunrise, get on a MPV and cross the custom. Along the way, we stop for toilet break and meals when necessary. We were at first a little hesitate to fit 7 men into a car, considering that some of us are quite tall and some of us are quite big. Turns out it was reasonable. We was nice to travel in 1 car than several cars. No need to wait for one another or wonder what is the front car's driver intention. Plus, we have so many drivers, the option to change driver is always available.

We manage to fit into Raymond MPV.

By 1030, we know we were 30 mins away from the trail start. So we stop at Ayer Keroh rest stop.

We ready reach Gunung Datuk trail start at 1100am. Took some time to change into our gears, visit the toilet and pay park permit fee of RM5 per person. There is a carpark, campsite with proper toilet and shower facilities. By Malaysia standard, this is consider very well maintained.

So just before we hit the trail, I stopped by a shelter to gather the men. I took the chance to appreciate them for taking time out for this trip. It means a lot for me that I can gather brothers whom I am close to for a trip prior to my wedding. Since I couldn't possibly ask all of them to be my groomsmen, this is my way of telling them that I consider all of them my buddies and that they are important to me. We had a short prayer and I led the way to the trails.

Gunung Datuk is slightly over 800mt. It's a single track trail. Getting lost is quite unheard of unless you stray off the main trails and bash thru the forest. The first half of the trail is quite steep. After that the the trails becomes gentle slope. It's not technical and anyone with reasonable fitness would likely to make it to the summit.

After a few flights of stairs, you will reach the summit.

Reward ourselves with snacks at the Summit
It started raining  when we descend.

At the base/starting point. we get cool water to wash up.

No trek is complete without a good meal. We stopped by one of my fav Zi Char stall in Cheng, Melaka.

Look forward to our next trek together.
