黄小琥-伴

I hear this song on the radio and was dumbstruck by the words. So loving, so sincere, so raw, so unpretentious, so out of this world. Picture yourself at 90 years old and your spouse singing this song to you.

Is is human nature to desire for someone to share your live. I don't have the answer, ask those who are married. Even better, ask those who are happily married for 50 years.

黄小琥-伴

作詞:姚若龍 作曲:于曉光、李偉菘 編曲:Terence Teo

Relocation of Malaysia railway station to Woodlands.

New development between Singapore and Malaysia government. After 20 years, both side have come to an agreement to free up the railway land (202ha) in Singapore. Currently, the land is owned by Malaysia.

Tanjong Pager Railway Station will cease operation by July 2011. The new station will be located at Woodlands  existing CIQ. I look forward to the station relocation. For years, I've be grumbling to myself. Whenever I need to take the train to Malaysia, I have to travel for more than 1 hour to get to Tg. Pagar Railway Station, another 1 hour for the train to travel back to Woodlands before entering Malaysia. Woodlands CIQ is 20mins from my house.

Travelling to Malaysia destination accessible by train would be more appealing now. I'm think of taking the train to Kluang to trek Belumut, Merapoh to trek Gunung Tahan, Dabong to trek Stong.

Twin Enjin Program

It's been a rollercoaster ride in my flight training recently. I've been under a lot of stress. Since I've completed my single engine program, I've now advanced to the twin engine program. According to the syllabus, I've to complete my twin engine program in 35hours.

I find the learning curve extremely steep. Every flight is highly stressful. It doesn't help that I've a instructor who is less than patience. On my 3rd flight, he expected me to memorize all the procedure and checklist items. I could hardly breath in flight with him sitting next to me.

Things have gotten better in the last few flights. For some reason, my instructor is a lot more understanding and patience. I really appreciate that because I can be quite a slow learner and gets worse when I'm overstressed (or am I not alone). After taking a few days off to learn the POH and operating procedure, I am a lot more prepared for the flight.

My last flight was actually very encouraging. I was able to carry out most of the procedure. I could also recall all the checklist smoothly. When we landed, my instructor told me it was an excellent flight and the debrief lasted for 2mins. Usually the lenght of the debriefing is an indication of my performance. The longer the debrief means I've made a lot of mistake in flight.

I went back to my room and change into my jogging gears. I didn't know what else to do. Most of my friends have gone back home. The weather was cool. I was taking in the sunset and took a brief moment to walk. God is awesome. I felt like this beautiful sunset was meant for me. It was God's way of saying: "My son, I am proud of you. I am here with you."

Immunity

"He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." -Matthew 5:45b

Immunity. Are you immune to blessing? How about disaster? Maybe every situation is just a situation, not purposely meant to be a blessing or disaster. Take for instance, Jack wants to bring his wife and children to the East Coast Park for an afternoon of cycling and family bonding time, so he prays for sunny day. Jenny lives in Marine Parade, and on a hot afternoon, she's praying for rain to cool down the island. If you were God, whose prayer would you answered?

One of my friend's house in Melaka got broken into. The robber took a laptop and 2 external hard disk. He and his wife were devout Christian. Every Wed evening, he open up with house for bible discussion. He is a good man. So why him, there are hundred of houses in the vicinity.

God teaches us how to pray thru the bible. And in a prayer, thanksgiving is included. It is easier for us to take note of bad things that happened in our life and we forget about the blessing. Who provide you with good health? Why should your bodily function properly? What if your heart just decided to give itself a break? Afterall, it has been working unceasingly since the day you were formed in your mother's womb. Who gave you legs to provide you with such great mobility to get around almost everywhere you want to?

Therefore, sometimes I feel like praying is unfathomable. When I pray, I don't always pray have full confidence of my prayer. Because I don't believe that ALL prayers are meant to be answered. God is certainly not a genie in a bottle. Some prayers will be answered but at a time table that doesn't synchronize with yours. I pray to communicate with God, and he speaks to me thru the holy spirit. Prayer teaches me to rely on God; To admit that I am weak and He is strong and that I need him, I am dependent on him.

So the reason for this entry is this- I've been going thru challenges in life and so my prayer becomes prevalent. I prayed for a lot of things with I didn't get. In fact in turns out almost the way I pray for it to NOT happen. Just hang in there. I know that God has a message for me. And I believe He's molding me in the process. Man, I hate the process. Ok, I'll stop complaining.

Smile when you're joyful, cry when you're sad

Do you know Neil Humphrey? He is a British humour columnist who moved to Singapore in 1996 and lived here for more than 10 years. He's authored 3 books about Singapore. Recently, he wrote an article for Men's Health. Under the column Man to Man, he write about his thoughts on men who cry.

He declared that he is a cry baby when it comes to movie. Have you seen the movie "My Sister's Keeper". I can relate to Neil because I was crying when I watch the movie on DVD.

Ok, so it's my turn. Do I cry at movie? Yes I do. I think I got braver at admitting it after reading the article. Coincidentally, I was talking to Nami about the Japanese movie that won Best Foreign film at the Academy Award. I cried at the theatre too. Over the years, I realise I am more sensitive to my feelings and I can better articulate them. I no longer find it weird or girlie to cry. God made me a human with the ability to experience the full spectrum of emotion-Joy,anxiety,sadness, happiness, loneliness, great sense of fulfillment, indignant and so on. Sometimes I wonder if we have enough words in the world to describe emotion.

When you are happy, you want to share it with someone. When you are full of joy, you can't take the smile off your face. When you are sad, disappointed, depressed, you cry. There is nothing unusually or weird about crying. Sometimes, I find it surprising that I cry and I try to find out why. I hardly think about it when I broke out into laughter. Am I right?

You see, there are alot of things about our body and about the world that we have yet to fully understand and comprehend. Take for instance, thunderstorm. Up till today, no one can fully understood how clouds are formed. How is it that the gathering of water vapour can generate so much energy? We know about the static electric form in cumulus clouds. But where and how does the energy comes from. All we know is that lightning could generate tens of thousands of wattage.

Why do human cry? We don't really know. Though some speculate that it's the body natural mechanism to cope with stress and/or grieve. We also cry when we're overwhelm with joy, Haven't you seen men cry when they win at sports?

If you don't usually suppress your smile when you are happy, do the same when you are sad. Go on and cry.

Another "Jerry" out there

Have you ever meet a complete stranger who shares a whole lot of similarity with you? I was searching for information on the Ketam Mountain Bike Trail on the internet and was linked to a blog. This guy loves outdoor, based on his Flickr professional account. He has done trekking, kayaking, mountaineering, India, The World Greatest Race held at Gobi desert and more.

He flies too, as he claims to be a former airline pilot. Under his profile, he describe himself as a travel and adventure writer and photographer, and a former airline pilot. He embodies almost everything I am and I want to be. Look, my point to not to tell you how much I idolize him or am I making a comparison to see who is better. I just want to point out that sometimes, by coincident, there is another "me" out there. His blog could be my blog, his flickr album could be my album too.

I find it intriguing. If we ever become friends, how would that friendship turn out to be?

Pulau Ubin getaway

Ok, so I went on a morning date. How about this-We are meeting at 630am!!!

Nami is in Singapore, I wanted to show her the part of untouched Singapore at Pulau Ubin and to visit Chek Jawa. I thought it would be great to spend a morning at the wetland and be surrounded by the wonderful nature. Since the tide for the day is lowest at 8am, we have to get there as early as possible. Because at Chek Jawa, the lower the tide, the more marine life you can spot. They say that seeing is believing. It's not so true in the case of Chek Jawa, you can't see the marine life during high tide, but the marine life are so alive and abundant under the water. Don't believe, check out this website.

My pair up is Jason and Fang. We all manage to reach Changi Village at 7am. I can tell that Fang is excited, this will be the first time she stepping on the ground of Pulau Ubin. It was a beautiful morning with blue sky.

I was surprised to find that only some of the shops are opened. I thought it's the public holiday and Singaporeans will be flooding the island. Our breakfast option are limited to a Malay coffee shop and a Chinese Coffee shop, we chose the former. Between Mee Rebus, Mee Siam, Lontong and Nasi Lemak, what would be your pick? I chose Nasi Lemak. I think Nami is trying Mee Siam for the first time. Sometimes I forgotten that our local food could be too exciting and spicy for foriengers, especially so for breakfast!! The last time I recommended Mee Siam to my Norwegian friend when I sent him off at the Changi Airport at 7am. He was struggling to cope with the spiciness of Mee Siam, I think it woke him up immediate. Works better than caffeine. Luckily, this Mee Siam is not too spicy for Nami.

We rent bicycle, it took us 20mins to get to Chek Jawa Visitor Centre. The ride was very nice. Pulau Ubin remains the same for most parts. Unlike in mainland Singapore, development becomes a norm. Opening of Resort World Singapore, Universal Studio, The Helix, Circle Line stage 2, Marina Bay Sands and so on. This road in Pulau Ubin remains the same when I first came here 18 years ago.

I am not an expert at Chek Jawa. All I know is that is an inter-tidal area encompassing six ecosystems within one square kilometer. A boardwalk is built along the wetland. Guided tour to explore the wetland on the shore is possible thru Nparks website. Places are limited and demands are very high. We manage to spot some crabs, fish and mud skippers. The boardwalk itself is an attraction.

We ended our Chek Jawa visit at the No. 1 House, which is a Tudor-style cottage build by the British in the 1930's. The cottage has been restored and a new jetty has been built. From the jetty, the view of the cottage is very resort-like. Almost doesn't feel like I'm in Singapore. 1 interest feature worth mentioning is the fireplace. I've never seen a house with a fireplace like this cottage. Maybe the British like to have indoor BBQ by the fireplace.

It's 10am and we wanted to explore more. I wanted to bring them to one of my favourite campsite. There isn't a name for the place except that it's near Mamam campsite and the NPCC campsite. The road I use to take is close for access. I think there's an alternate road but I'm not sure.

The other campsite I like is near the Kekek Quarry. You have to past by a Thai temple in order to get there. Now the road leading to the Thai temple is close to car access and the Thai Temple is gone. What stands where a solar panel is used to be the temple. The campsite is now overgrown with grass, it looks deserted for awhile. The old jetty is gone too. The coast is now lined with fences, to deter illegal immigrants from entering I presume. I am a little disappointed that the Kekek quarry is fenced up too. No more swimming in the clear blue water.

The area around the Ketam Quarry is now a new attraction known as the Ketam Mountain Bike Park. It's a 8km trail with varying difficulty. The German Girl Shrine is located here too. I would like to try out the trails. The only problem is I don't have a bike. I saw a lot of bikers here with their good bikes and gears. It's a sign that that biking is gaining popularity in Singapore.

By this time, the sun is scorching hot and almost unbearable. We cycle back to the jetty and stop by the Why You So Like That?? stall for a drink. You should check out the coconut drink on a hot day like this.

I am quite impressed with Nami. I thought that certain section of cycling is pretty demanding physically. The bumpy trails are sometimes slightly technical and tricky. But Nami didn't complain!!! I really think she had a good time, though I think we'll be having muscle ache the next day.

This is my short getaway, a holiday without using my passport.
