7 pounds is a story about a man in pursuit of helping people. Tim Thomas, as Will Smith is known in the movie, goes on a manhunt for “good” people.
2 years ago, Tim was involved in a car crash killing 7 people, including his fiancée. He survived. However, he has not gone through a day without carrying the burden of guilt. From my perspective, he wants to redeem himself. Maybe he felt like he couldn’t live with the guilt anymore. He needs to do something.
How many people did Tim help? He donated a lung lobe to his own brother, part of his liver to a child service worker named Holly, a kidney to a coach, and then bone marrows to a young boy. He also gave the deeds of his beach house to a woman who is suffering under an abusive boyfriend.
Tim wants to help more people whom he deem worthy. 1st person- Ezra. A very good-hearted blind salesman who is not quick to anger and not bitter about his condition. 2nd Person- Emily Posa. A self-employed card maker who has a heart condition. She is waiting for a suitable donor. Due to her rare blood type, her chances are narrow.
Tim went all out to help Emily. Firstly, he forges his brother identity as a IRS (Inland Tax) officer and cancels all her taxes due. He helps repair her century old printer.
But the greatest help Tim could offer to Emily is this- To donate his heart to her.
Time planned his suicide way in advance. Roping in his best friend, he was able to arrange for his heart to be donated to Emily, and his eyes to Ezra.
Tim died in a bathtub. He was killed by his pet box jellyfish- the most lethal creature on earth. His plans work. Emily received his heart and lived. Ezra received his eyes and gain sight.
I was blowed away by such act of love. Only in the bible can one find such sacrificial and unconditional love.
13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
At least some of these people are more worthy to have someone die for them. When Christ died for me, I am so unworthy. I don’t even know Jesus yet.
Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Roman 5:7-8
I am neither good nor upright when Jesus died for me. I was cut to the heart after watching Tim’s sacrificial love. Now I had a deeper understanding of Jesus sacrificial love.
