When I got to Sichuan, the locals speak Sichuanese. In Sichuan, we spent an average of 8hrs on the road daily. My driver and guide are sitted in front and they will be speaking in sichuanese. The 2 Hk brothers besides me will be speaking in Cantonese. Only when communication is necessary would we speak in a group in Mandarin
In Hong Kong, Cantonese dominates the SAR. Fortunately in the recent years, more Hong Kong citizens picked up the language for trade and business purposes. Before I went to Hong Kong, I imagine that I need to use sign language to go about with my daily interaction with HK people. Turns out that many are able to converse in Mandarin- 7-11 store keeper, MTR station controller, policemen and restaurant. Thru my interaction with the Hong Kong disciples , I got a better picture.
